- 246 suspected cases, 65 deaths, 4 confirmed
- Non-Zaire Ebola strain, sequencing pending
- Affected zones: Mongwalu, Rwampara, Bunia
- High risk of spread to Uganda and South Sudan
- Logistical and security challenges hamper response
"Africa CDC confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in DR Congo's Ituri province, the 17th since 1976. As of May 15, 2026, 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths have been reported, with only four deaths laboratory-confirmed. The strain is non-Zaire Ebola, sequencing ongoing. Cases are concentrated in Mongwalu, Rwampara, and Bunia health zones. Proximity to Uganda and South Sudan raises cross-border spread concerns. Attacks by armed groups, population movement, and gaps in contact tracing complicate response. An urgent coordination meeting with neighboring countries and partners was convened to discuss priorities including surveillance, safe burials, and resource mobilization."
