"The rare Bundibugyo virus is driving an Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC that has crossed into Uganda. On 17 May 2026, WHO declared a PHEIC. As of 18 May, there were 528 suspected cases and 132 suspected deaths. No licensed vaccine or specific treatment exists. Existing Zaire ebolavirus vaccines may not be effective. Two vaccine candidates are in development but months away from clinical trials. Response currently relies on classical public health measures."
