"WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on May 17, 2026. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which no approved vaccines or therapeutics exist. Over 300 suspected cases and 88 deaths have been reported, mostly in Congo's Ituri province. Two imported cases have been confirmed in Uganda, one fatal. The WHO advised against border closures, stating the outbreak does not meet pandemic criteria."
