"The World Health Organization has declared the epidemic of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) as of May 16, 2026. This marks the first PHEIC for a Bundibugyo virus outbreak. The declaration aims to enhance international coordination, surveillance, and response efforts to curb cross-border transmission. Affected regions include North Kivu and Ituri in DRC and neighboring districts in Uganda."
