0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
  • Ervebo only protects against Zaire ebolavirus.
  • No approved vaccine exists for Bundibugyo virus causing the 2026 outbreak.
  • WHO declared PHEIC on May 17, 2026 for Uganda/DRC outbreak.
  • Researchers are developing broader vaccines.

"The currently approved Ebola vaccine, Ervebo, is specific to Zaire ebolavirus and does not protect against other species such as Bundibugyo virus. The 2026 outbreak in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, declared a PHEIC by WHO on May 17, 2026, is caused by Bundibugyo virus, for which no approved vaccine exists. Scientists emphasize the need for vaccines effective against multiple Ebola viruses and for accelerated clinical trials during outbreaks."
