Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1976-2014: analysis of 996 cases from seven outbreaks (elifesciences.org)
- Compiled line list of 996 probable/confirmed/suspected cases from seven EVD outbreaks in DRC (1976-2014)
- Overall CFR 79%; 100% mortality in children under 2; lower odds of death in 5-15 age group
- Each day delay from symptom onset to hospitalization increased odds of death by 11%
- Outbreaks with initial R>3 were controlled quickly; those with R<3 had slower response and longer duration
"This research article compiles individual-level data from all seven Ebola virus disease outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between 1976 and 2014, covering 996 cases. Key findings: case-fatality ratio (CFR) was 79% overall, but varied by outbreak; highest CFR in children under 2 years (100%) and lowest in 5-15 year olds; odds of dying increased 11% per day delay in hospitalization; outbreaks with initial reproduction number R>3 were rapidly controlled, while those with lower R (<3) lasted longer and were larger. Healthcare workers were disproportionately affected. The study provides the first comprehensive line list for DRC outbreaks."
