0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
  • At least 500 suspected cases, 130 deaths in DRC/Uganda outbreak
  • Confirmed Ebola Bundibugyo species, first detected in 2007 in Uganda
  • Outbreak spread to North Kivu, including Butembo and Goma
  • No licensed vaccines or treatments for Bundibugyo species
  • US CDC travel ban; Africa CDC calls for support at source

"The WHO representative in the DRC, Anne Ancia, reported at least 500 suspected cases and 130 suspected deaths in a growing Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo species. There is uncertainty about the index case, and initial tests in Bunia were negative because they only detected Ebola Zaire. The outbreak has spread to North Kivu, with cases in Butembo and Goma. WHO has 40 health professionals on the ground. The US CDC issued a travel ban on foreigners from DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan, which Africa CDC criticized. No licensed vaccines or therapeutics exist for the Bundibugyo strain."
