WHO approves first Bundibugyo diagnostic test and launches treatment trial amid escalating outbreak
7 day briefing • 2026-07-01 - 2026-07-07 (2 weeks ago) • frozen
This week saw critical advancements in the response to the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) outbreak in the DRC and Uganda. The WHO added the first molecular diagnostic test for BDBV to its Emergency Use Listing (EUL) on 2 July, expanding testing capacity in the DRC from 200–400 tests per day at two sites to over 2000 tests per day across ten laboratories (S1). Concurrently, the PARTNERS platform trial began enrolling patients in the DRC to evaluate MBP134 monoclonal antibody and remdesivir as treatments, as no approved therapies exist for BVD (S2).
The WHO also released comprehensive clinical management guidelines for all filoviruses on 1 July, harmonizing approaches for Ebola, Marburg, Sudan, Bundibugyo, and Taï Forest viruses using GRADE methodology (S5). These developments follow the PHEIC declaration on 17 May 2026, with DRC reporting 1406 confirmed cases and 438 deaths as of 2 July (S1, S2). Despite the lack of a licensed vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain (S4), these diagnostic and therapeutic advances are crucial for outbreak control.
